Know Your Enemy- Charleston Southern

OUR 4-4 Crimson Tide host the 3-4 Buccaneers in a pivotal match-up. Okay, I'm using hyperbole now.

Charleston preview.
CS (abbreviating as I'm too lazy to type) is better than their record. Of their 4 losses, 2 were to ranked teams on the road (New Mexico and Baylor) and the others were close losses (UNC-Wilmington in OT and Delaware).

Season stats

This is a typical offense power vs defensive power match-up as CS averages 92.1 a game while we give up 67.8. In CS's 4 losses they average 78.8... we keep it in the low 70s and we win this one. If it gets in the 80s... we're in trouble.

CS has 5 averaging 10+ PPG led by Saah Nimbly at 15. He's a 5'8" guard that runs the offense and averages 6.3 assists/game, He's a better 3pt shooter than inside the arc. Matt Kennedy, Will Saunders, and Sheldon Strickland are also ones to watch outside as all of them are 45% or better beyond the arc (45, 54, 48). Cedric Bowen is an undersized, but effective forward who pulls in 5.3 boards to go with his 9.1 PPG. Arlon Harper is their other scorer, but to be honest his shooting stats kind of suck (40.4/32.0).

- 48.3% FG
- 41.7% 3pt FG
-  +4 rebound margin
- 74.6 FT

Obviously every non-conference game going forward is a MUST WIN for us if we are to dream (and it's a pipe dream right now) of making the NCAAT and this game will be a tough out. I wonder about the mindset of our team right now... losing 3 of 4 this early doesn't bode well. Will Anthony Grant gets the troops ready for this game or will we continue this slide? I'm going to be optimistic and say we win this one... by 4.

Tip-off is 8:30 PM EST (7:30 PM CST). Note this is a change as originally it was supposed to tip-off at 7PM CST. No TV for this one that I know of so you can either pay to watch it on rolltide.com or listen to it on the radio/internet.

Outstanding move by legendary basketball coach Anthony Grant, not starting Trevor Releford. Would not want to start your best player. Further evidence of Grant's basketball genius.

Probably looked at coach wrong in practice. One of my former coworkers knows Jamychal well and he had unbelievable stories about the going on within the Grant regime. Thought it was sour grapes most of the time but he product on the court is clearly showing something hasn't been right for 5 yrs.

Even Stevie Wonder can see Relly and Grant don't get along. Been like that since the LSU suspension.

Yep, I have pointed that out before. Grant and Releford is a mirror image of Gottfried, and Ron Steele.

Then again, it's not like Grant shares a bond with any of his players.

Been dying to ask my contacts at NCSU what Lacey has to say about leaving...

Thank goodness this game wasn't televised. Probably set basketball back 60 years. Grant is channeling Hank Iba.

It was pretty brutal. We turned it on at the end, but this was hard to watch even by our standards.

Releford was kept out as a precaution due to an injured hip. But don't let that get in the way of your narrative.

I see some of you have already chimed in with the typical pessimistic comments. It wasn't a pretty game, but I commend the team for gutting out a win with Releford out with an injury and Jacobs missing stretched of the game after aggravating his shoulder injury from this summer. I thought Nick showed some real toughness coming back into the game and knocking down some free throws down the stretch.

I can understand everyone is hypnotized by offense, but how about some kudos for the defensive effort tonight? This Charleston Southern team has scored buckets against some quality teams this season and our guys just shut them down. Great job on the defensive end.

Nice to see Coop finally break out of his offensive slump. That stretch where he knocked down the three consecutive 3-pointers was what gave Bama a cushion and opened things up a bit. Hopefully this game will get him going. Retin was also great tonight. Not only scoring 22 points, but he had 9 boards and was once again a monster on the defensive end. If he keeps playing at this level, he could find himself on an all-conference team at season's end.

It was good to see Hale get more minutes tonight. He only knocked down the one shot, and he's got to improve on defense, but he does give the team a legitimate shooting threat. I think he's only going to get better with more opportunities.

On the flip side, does anyone know where Levi Randolph is? Not one of Levi's better games tonight. He had more fouls than points. In a game in which Releford is out and Jacobs' status was up in the air, Levi's got to step up and be more of a factor. Tough night for Algie as well. Everybody has to play at a higher level on Tuesday.

Speaking of Tuesday, I've seen Wichita State play several times this season. They are a good team: tough group of players, a great coaching staff. But. They're not heads and shoulders above our guys in terms of talent. Alabama can win this game, but they're going to have to play their best game of the season to date. Hopefully, Releford can play. Grant did not say tonight if Trevor will play, but I have to feel that only a serious injury would keep Trevor out of this game. Hopefully, Nick is also able to give it a go.

And it would be nice if the fans could come out and support the team. This is the highest ranked non-conference opponent to come into Coleman in a while.

after mark gottfried run ron steele into the ground, i wouldn't bitch about this. it's good to see someone looking out for the players down there.

and, yes, 'happy' WSU isn't that much better than we are and it's in our house and the crowd should show up, but..............

as hard a time as i give you about being a sunshine pumper, if you were a betting man (and i'll bet you're not) i think i know how you would play. WSU may not be that much more talented, but i'll tell you what they are that much more: tough. they will be well coached and they'll fight. count on that.

as to the crowd, over the past 10 years, crowds have showed up for these games only to be sent into the cold disappointed. i wouldn't bet on over 6000 tues.

it is what it is.

I realize that now. However I do think there is something deeper going on. As BJ pointed out, Grant and Releford clearly do not see eye to eye.

One win over Charleston Southern, and the AG apologists are back out in full force.

Msmilie said...

Based on what? If that were true, why would Releford hang around for all four years?

Msmilie said...

Oh stop it. If we can criticize them profusely in losses, we can certainly give them props in their wins.
