auburn hired Bruce Pearl

I am afraid Coach Grant is about to get a lesson in how to market a program in this state.  We will soon be battling UAB for the leftover recruits.  This is a bad day for Alabama basketball.

On the other hand, auburn becoming decent in basketball may be the only thing that will prompt our administration and boosters to actually give a crap and try to compete, so maybe there is a silver lining somewhere down the road.

This must be how auburn fans felt when we hired Nick Saban but even worse because Auburn never had a chance to hire Saban.

Is this real or just still speculation. My internet has been down and I cant connect to al.com or espn

Oh, it's real. He's already landed and jumped into a mosh pit in Lee County. He wasted no time in promoting the program with energy and enthusiasm, a concept we haven't seen around here in a long time.

Interested to hear your thoughts on this Ron, and what you think CAG should do in response.

This sucks. This is the worst I have ever felt as an Alabama fan in any sport, and that is saying something. Bill Battle, and UA could not have demonstrated more incompetence. Pearl would have walked to Tuscaloosa and won big for our program, if Bill Battle had not buried his head in the sand and acted like a coward. Today is further evidence that the good 'ole boy network need to die in T-town. I listened to CM Newton on Finebaum, and it was the most bullishit I have heard since Friday. There is no way I believe that Bill Battle or CM Newton believe even 10% of what they say on this issue.
Now, Anthony Grant better stretch his comfort zone and market the program. Bruce Pearl is going to promote, promote, promote. I'm not saying CAG has to match that, but he has to show some semblance of a personality, and act like you are enjoying yourself here. He also needs to change his staff up, and hire better coaches. Pearl has a great staff in place, and CAG needs to make the changes to try and measure up. I'll be rooting for Coach Grant, but i'm not optimistic.

I hate that their wrong but the people saying that Bruce Pearl can't take Auburn to another level are fooling themselves. Even if Anthony Grant turns out to be a good coach he won't be able to match Pearl. The guys a program promoter and a great coach not a good one. I would easily put him ahead of Calipari as the second best coach in the conference to Donovan.

He's already on twitter, inviting the students to meet him at the arena tonight for free pizza.

By midnight tonight, he will have done more promoting of his program than Grant has in his five years here.
I heard that the UA AD has known for two months that Auburn wanted Bruce Pearl and wanted him badly, take it for what it's worth.

Jesus, the hyperbole is pretty thick around here. Bruce Pearl in all of his majesty posted a mere 4-3 record against Alabama during his salad days at Tennessee. That was at the end of Gottfried's tenure and the beginning of Grant's tenure. Not exactly halcyon days for the Bama program. Pearl's not dominating anybody.

Assuming Pearl sticks it out in Crazyville for more than 2 years (If this doesn't serve as more than a stepping stone job for Pearl in the aftermath of his show-cause penalty, I'll be shocked), it's still going to take him time to get that program turned around. If Grant doesn't show progress next season, that will be it and Bama will hire a new coach. The program won't be near defunct if that comes to pass.

Pearl is a swine and this will be proven again in due time (when Pearl bolts from the AU Family for a better job, the comments from the Auburn cult should be amusing to say the least). If anything, this actually puts some pop back into the Bama/Auburn basketball rivalry because I never really liked to hate on Barbee, but I'll love hating on this loudmouth blubberbox in charge now.

Stop. Please, dude, just stop. Pearl's 3 losses to Alabama came in T-town his first year, against the last 'Bama team to win an NCAAT, on a half court shot at the buzzer, and when he was suspended. This is a devastating day for our program. No other way to spin it. Grant is not near the coach that Pearl is and you know it. This was a huge hire by Auburn and a massive blunder on our part. There is no way that Grant is a better option for us than Pearl. And, yes i'm pissed off, and i'm going to let our arrogant, apathetic AD know about it, because what has gone down with our program in recent days is an abomination.

Msmilie said...

Jesus, dude. Take a chill pill. I'd rather pull for a classy guy who gave it his all, even in losing, than that rat bastard, Pearl. All you care about is wins, I get that. But some of us have a higher moral compass when it comes to these types of discussions.

Whether Grant gets it done or not, I'm thankful that Bruce Pearl will not be the coach at the university of Alabama. And I pray that the university never feels as desperate as some of our fans that they stoop to hiring such a low-rent son of a bitch.

Yeah, Pearl will win some games at Auburn, but who cares? Alabama will be just fine, with or without Grant. Your premise that Pearl is bringing some kind of doomsday scenario to Alabama's basketball program is laughable. Calm down, take a deep breath, and give it a rest. At the end of the day, Auburn hired a good basketball coach. Good for them. It's only going to make beating them that much sweeter.

crimsontider said...

I'm sure we would all love to live in a world where we were paid and employed based on the quality of our character, but that is not why the University of Alabama pays Grant 2 million a year. And we can go on self righteous rants about how awful of a person Pearl is, and how Grant is the moral equivalent of Mother Theresa, but at the end of the day, he is paid to win games, and generate interest in the program, and he is currently failing miserably on both counts, and being paid a top 25 salary to do so.
I, personally would have been proud of my university and my program for giving a guy who hit rock bottom a second chance.
I will ALWAYS support my program, but i'm not going to look the other way as my program crashes and burns, because if we as fans do that, then the AD will never do anything.

Msmilie said...

A guy who hit rock bottom because he lied to an NCAA investigator and then tried to have his players, his assistants, recruits and their families lie as well. My god, are you that dense? I'm all for second chances but there is a history with Pearl that goes far beyond what he did at Tennessee. Do some reading and get back to me. He's an embarrassment. A loudmouth who likes to engage in tomfoolery in an effort to make himself likable so that his transgressions have less weight should they be brought to light. Even Tennessee fans to this day can't bring themselves to disown the bastard though his actions brought harm to their university and basketball program. Why? Because Bruce painted himself orange and acted like a buffoon in the student section during a women's basketball game.....yuk....yuk...yuk. The shit at the Auburn airport today was the same thing. You never would see the really great coaches do stupid shit like that. It's all PR, illusion, lies. If I want to see shit like that, I'll turn on the evening news.

In the end, should Anthony Grant be fired, it will be because he didn't win enough games, not because he didn't act like a horse's ass.

Silver lining

We were probably going to be pretty mediocre next year anyway and provided Grant gets fired most coaches don't get it turned around that much in year one anyway. Lets just hope Pearl gets a big time offer after 1-2 years. I'll bet he would be back to Knoxville in a heart beat if Tennessee fired Martin after next year and offered the job to Pearl.

crimsontider said...

It's ridiculous to expect the fans to get behind a guy with Grant's record through five years if he does not act like they are worth his time. I said he never had to be like Bruce Pearl, but he has got to market the program, and act like he wants to be here, if he wants to garner any fan support next season.

I think the one thing we can all take solace in is $lick Rick $tan$bury'$ inability to get a coaching job.

bobbyjack said...

Yeah.. and we could've had him. At least we have solid academics and a coach that won't impact the fb team.
I am seriously thinking about taking a year off of Alabama basketball in protest of The Battle Plan.

crimsontider said...

You can reach Bill at bbattle@ia.ua.edu if you feel so inclined….

Msmilie said...

About as much use as signing a petition or writing a letter to your Senator. The guy has made his decision. Get on board for next season or find something else to do. It's pretty simple.

crimsontider said...

I'm going to support my team, and program, while also being as realistic as possible about its overall state.

Msmilie said...

First sensible thing you've written all day.

bobbyjack said...

No sense in wasting my time doing that... I'll pass the time watching ACC and Big East hoops.

crimsontider said...

Unfortunately they neglected hoops in favor of football too (the Big East). Did you watch the ESPN documentary about it the other night? Great stuff and insight about how the league fell apart.

Auburn is very likely to finish in dead-last place in the SEC next season with Bruce Pearl as their coach, based on their current team members and their low quality recruits coming in next season. If Mississippi State finishes as last, then AU will be next to last. Would 5-star players be interested in joining a team full of 2-stars ? I expect Alabama to sweep Auburn next season in Basketball, and probably the season after that.

Bill Battle actually had the arrogance to release another "Battle Plan" after this past weeks events. My lord, they really do think we are stupid.
