2nd Chance Meat- SC Cocks part 2 7PM EST (6PM CST)

Despite the 4-10 conference record, SC Lite seems to be improved. Of their 10 conference losses, 4 of them have been by 6 points or less. Sounds similar doesn't it?

Current write-up from SC Lite
Stats

Which Bama team shows up... the one that looked like a fringe NCAAT squad at Auburn and vs aTm at home or the one that showed up for UF, Vandy, and UGA at home? Who knows... I give up trying to figure this out.

Everything for us from here on out is for the NIT. Win out at home and win at Vanderbilt and we are a .500 squad in the conference. That should get us into the NIT and probably a road game @ UAB (the football program the board of trustees axed due to a long-standing grudge). I suspect I'll take heat for that remark... oh well.

What I would like to see tonight is more Coleman running the point. Being he is the only real PG we got it would make sense for him to see the court and get some experience, but what do I know. Also, more Norris as you can see his confidence rising as he is more likely to take the open shot than he was earlier in the year. I'd also like to see us get the ball to Jimmie Taylor in the post as he was getting good position inside against UGA only to watch us brick eleventy billion shots.

A win quiets the questioning of Grant and the future of Alabama basketball for at least the next few days. I'll go into this in depth in March.

UAB actually has a great chance to win the CUSA tournament. They are in 3rd place, but only 1 game behind Louisiana Tech who they throttled by 20 in their last meeting. They are undefeated at home in conference play, and the tournament will be held within the friendly confines of Bartow Arena in Birmingham's historic southside. I'm pulling for them, it would be good to have the state (and my hood) represented in March Madness.

I hope Bill Battle is making note of this crowd tonight. I never thought it could possibly be any worse than the David Hobbs era, but it's way worse right now.

No offense but I will never pull for UAB considering the fact that Bartow did everything he could to run down our basketball program and also get our football program on probation. Additionally, most of their so called fans voice a delusional hate complex towards Alabama basketball (constantly referring to us as UAT). I'm not even referring to the BOT shutting down their football program. Their fans have always acted that way towards UofA basketball. Now South Alabama, Troy, Jacksonville State, Alabama State, Alabama A&M and Samford I don't have a problem with.

well, the only positive from this game is they won. that's it. this is another of the games that the basketball was so bad, it felt like we lost despite winning.

this season i started a new 'bama basketball routine. as i've said here many times, i dearly love listening to chris stewart and brian passink call the games. passink has a very high basketball IQ and chris is just a trip. but the basketball is just unwatchable. women's basketball has become more palatable to me and i HATE watching lesbian basketball.

so i decided that i'd use the time productively. if the game's televised, it will be on the big screen. of course, the radio's on. then i'll either work on the 'puter or some honey-do. that way if something happens i'll hear it and can stop to watch it and not feel i've just wasted two hours of my life on this crap. (on a side note, i tried doing this during the duke/unc game the other night. no way. that dog don't hunt. those guys play the real thing)(and isn't duke's okafor a freak? i've never seen a big man with those moves. *****channelling larry munson***** "my god. a freshman!)

but this game i noticed something. one of the things i love about chris is he's a true blue 'bama fan. he doesn't hide it. he's one of us. and calling this game you could hear something different. he's tired of it. both of them are tired of it. both made mention (bitched) about the quality of the basketball. they're tired of showing up to call these games and seeing them devolve into wrestling matches. good defense is great. but my god, we can't run a fast break. can't alley-oop. can't run back-doors. can't do anything.......FUN. and they're tired of it. tired of having to spin the game. embellish the goings on, the crowd, all of it.

as i've said here before, in the past, no matter how bad the guys have played, chris and brian make them sound like the san antonio spurs. but last night, chris never sounded worse. mistake after mistake. constantly having to be corrected by tom stipe. and he didn't even try to hide it. making jokes about it.

and i don't blame him.

i was reminded of that scene in the matrix, where the sentinels have morpheus captive. they're trying to break him. one rubs the sweat of morpheus' brow and laments having to be there.

"it's the stench".

I get that mindset, and was honestly stirring a bit :). Nevertheless, the fact remains that Bartow is dead, and thus couldn't be more irrelevant. I hated him and them too back then. But, it's time to move on, and playing them in Bham and Ttown on a regular basis would be good for basketball in this state. I realize they have a small but very vocal minority of fans that are bitter towards us, but I live within 2 miles of their campus and I can tell you the vast majority of UAB fans/grads that I know are also either UA or auburn fans, with most being for UA. They hate PBJr and the BOT (and I can't say that I blame them), but generally root for our football and basketball teams.

CTider said...

I agree. It's way past time for the BOT to move on from a grudge that has lasted over two decades. Playing UAB would do wonders for basketball in this state. That's more important to me than a grudge that has nothing to do with the current state of either programs.

finebammer said...

playing uab would do wonders for...........uab. The University of Alabama has nothing to gain by playing uab. nothing.

now you're thinking to yourself, 'how does this smart ass know?' history.

1947. auburn's football program is literally being run on stolen coke machine money. David Housel, auburn historian, has said so himself. they had to have a game with us. we didn't need them to exist. everything you see pertaining to auburn athletics, the University built. why the hell do you think pat dye and bobby lowder pushed to get the football game in auburn after Coach Bryant died??

money. first, they had to have a game. money. then, they had to have the game in auburn. money.

it amazes me that an uneducated backwoods dolt such as myself can see this and those with supposed far superior intellect can't.

auburn's athletic dept. is in the red. ditto uab. guess what guys??? Alabama is in the black. not only is it in the black, the basketball program itself, with all it's problems, makes money. smell the coffee yet?

basketball in this state doesn't need a UA/uab game. again, go back and crack a history book. ever hear of the "golden age of basketball" in Alabama?? the mid-seventies to the early nineties. guess what guys??? WE DIDN'T PLAY uab.

for all of our troubles, who has Bruce Pearl pointed to as the team he wants to beat the most??? yeah, Alabama. Alabama, with all it's warts, is THE basketball standard in this state. has anyone heard Pearl pining for a game with uab???

didn't think so.

lowering ourselves to play uab won't do "wonders" for basketball in this state. what will is for the University's athletic dept. to start taking basketball serious.

go hire a real coach. commit to doing what it takes to compete with Kentucky. yeah, that's what i said. Kentucky. you want to generate interest? beat UK.

go recruit the players needed to beat UK. go build a program with beating UK in mind.

in the late sixties, Coach Bryant was where our b'ball program is now. he needed to make a change. he went to Darryl Royal, head coach at UTEP?? (no, the University of Texas) to learn some new tricks. he transformed himself and his program.

cultivate a mentality in Tuscaloosa that aspires to win championships. THAT"S what will generate interest in this state for basketball.

if uab wants something, let them go to their "boosters" for it.

and that's what i love to do when on the RARE occasion i run across a militant uab fan, ask them how much they contribute a year to their supposed program. last year? proof? back it up. skin in the game.

and that's their problem. the vast majority of their very small fan base love to talk but when it's time to pony up, they're sloshing it up in some southside dive.

My thoughts exactly finebammer. We have literally everything to lose and nothing to win by playing UAB. The Auburn comparison imo is dead on. Hopefully, our administration makes a commitment and goes after someone like Ben Howland instead of settling for a low mid-major coach like Prohm...I guess we shall see in about a month.

I stopped reading when "history 1947 auburn." You are comparing apples to transmissions.

i wouldn't get my hopes up. i know nothing but my feeling is if they make the NIT, Grant stays. Battle likes him. i think that's obvious. he's really gonna have to be pushed into firing him imo.

citadeltidefan said...

You may be right but I would wait until the season ends. If we lose the next 3 games (which is very likely) we won't even make the NIT. Cecil Hurt said paying the money for Grants buyout won't be an issue. Add to that the fact that attendance is at horrifically low level (probably as bad as its ever been in the modern era of Bama basketball). Despite our horrendous record last year the crowds weren't near as bad as this. Even with the Tide Pride tickets I think there will be a huge drop off in attendance revenue this year. I think the desperation of the Star Wars night proves this. Battle knows that with Randolph and Cooper gone the record will get even worse and the attendance at high school like numbers next year. Even if the administration is apathetic, crowds like that are just not acceptable for the image of a university in a major conference in the 2nd biggest revenue sport.

Also I might be reading way too much into it but I thought Grant looked like a dead man walking in the SEC Networks post-game interview. I know he usually has a dull persona with the media but his body language seemed more exaggerated and sad than usual like he knows the decision has already been made for his dismissal.

CTider said...

I think we should move the games to Forster's Auditorium next year if Grant comes back.

citadeltidefan said...

If Grant is retained they might as well do that because this program will be permanently in the dump.
