Fresh Meat- Mizzou @ 9PM EST (8PM CST) on the SECN

After the tough stretch we went through (1-5 in those games) we get quite possibly the worst team in the SEC AT HOME to recover with. I'm not sure where this Mizzou team stands history wise, but they got to be one of the worst ones the last 30 years. Even Quinn Snyder's last team was better than this I think. You can blame Frank Haith for this.

Ricky Tarrant is out for this game and it looks like it could be a while before we see him again. We need others to step up and not be afraid to shoot, but at the same time take better shots that Tarrant did.

Missouri won their opening SEC game vs LSU... and haven't won since.

Write-up
Stats

Johnathan Williams III and Wes Clark are the only players averaging double digit scoring. As a team they shoot a tad over 34% from beyond the arc... which is better than us (31%) but suck inside the arc (under 41%). Only Namon Wright shoots over 40% from 3.

They don't score a lot, don't rebound well, below average at the charity stripe, and turn the ball over a bunch... a refreshing change from our last few games. If there was a game to get well on this is it.

Kim Anderson inherited a wreck... I suspect in 2 years Mizzou will be in the top 1/3 of the SEC again.

This portion of the schedule looked fairly easy earlier on in the season, but Miss St and Vandy are playing much better... those are not ones I can easily check as W this year.

Y does Grant treat Mitchell like a walk on. with Tarrant hurt he couldn't b worse than Retins career 6.5 ppg average

Good question. Why not play Mitchell some? Would it not help his development? Also I've read that he is very passionate about the U of A . So experts please explain?

I really want to see Mitchell more. No idea why Grant didn't just redshirt him if he wasn't ever going to play him.

I agree that Mitchell should have been redshirted if they did not anticipate him playing more. The only thing I can figure is he's struggled from a physical standpoint, or struggled with the defensive assignments, thus he hasn't been able to crack the rotation. Hard to say. But in light of his not playing much, I would have liked to have seen him redshirted.

If our guys can't bring this one home tonight, the last month of the season could well be a train wreck.

With Shannon seemingly back in the starting line-up based on the last game, I'm hoping to see him put together back-to-back good games. Also very interested to see how Retin and Justin fill in for Ricky. They played well in Rupp. If they can combine for 10-15 points, 4-8 asts, a couple of steals and limit turnovers, I'll be very happy.

And it goes without saying, Jimmie needs to stay out of foul trouble.

I agree M Smilie on Mitchell. I have to say I read your and C Tiders comments regularly and you two are great advocates of Alabama basketball. I wish we had 10000 just like you. Like you I want the very best for the basketball program but it is a dead soldier right now. As much as I respect Anthony Grant and his character and discipline he really does a poor job of marketing the basketball program. Perhaps it's all about wins and losses and I know Ala fans love winners (doesn't everyone) but I'm at a loss. I'M guess very bad crowd tonight but we'll see.

With almost 6 yrs to rely on, outcomes of Bama games under Grant can be predicted. Closer loss at Rupp than home not surprising. If things continue to go to form, Bama will come out listless. Game will be close, or we will be down single digits most of the game (think Tenn Tech) and Bama will win by 1-3 at the end.

THIS IS ALABAMA BASKETBALL

Can't play defense. Probably shoots too well outside the arc.

Actually, it's two asshats with bags on their head. If you want to protest, don't buy a ticket. Don't show up just to be a goofball.

Thank you. CTider and I are polar opposites at times, but I respect his enthusiasm for Bama basketball. Anthony Grant will be judged accordingly, but I prefer to wait until the end of the season to make a final judgement.

Oh boy. Not a great 1st half. The team is playing with effort, moving the ball and making cuts on offense, but they just can't get out of their own way right now. 7 turnovers in the 1st half, and I'm not sure one of them was forced. Point guard play has been sporadic. The lack of a true post player continues to haunt this team, though I do like Kessens effort tonight.

Have to face facts. Right now, the NIT is the ceiling for this team. There's a good team under the surface, but the struggles on offense, rebounding issues and inability to protect the basketball just doesn't scream out to me that this team can win 8 of the last 10 to get on the bubble. And hell, if they lose this one tonight, not sure there's any postseason, four or three letters, in the future.

I understand and you two are opposites but you both care and we need a lot more of that.

I think Levi has a chance to play pro basketball. He has a great skill set and work ethic.

Half time....how bad can it get. Bama has a much better basketball team than Mizzou. It should never be this close. To keep running the high post offense is beyond stupid.

Msmilie said...

He has a chance, but he's been so strong from an academic standpoint that I'm not sure basketball is the priority for him once he leaves Alabama.

Msmilie said...

I'll take the win. It wasn't a thing of beauty, but when your favorite team has lost 5 of 6, you take what you can get.

Nice to see Levi step up in that 2nd half. I think he had 13, and really jump-started the offense to help Bama go on a little bit of run. Shannon Hale continues to pull himself back from the abyss he was staring into. Solid game tonight. If his jumper ever returns, he could finish really strong. Retin played well. Seemed unafraid of stepping up and taking more of a role offensively in the second half. He made some hustle plays that gave the team some energy (it damn sure wasn't coming from the stands). And I also thought Mike played a solid game (6 pts, 6 reb).

Have to keep it real though. This Mizzou team isn't very good, and it took Alabama entirely too long to dispatch of them. Nevertheless, our guys did what they needed to do to get the win. Doesn't bump up the resume, but a loss would have crushed the last remnants of hope.

Okay. That sets up a big game for Bama on Saturday in Baton Rouge. A win gets them back to .500 in league play, a road win over a (current) RPI top 50 team, and I think would put them back in the conversation for an at-large berth. It's going to be tough though. Martin and Mickey for LSU are exactly the types of guys this Bama team struggles against. The key to the game is can Alabama cause some problems for the LSU guards? Martin and Mickey are going to do what they do. It's when the guards (Hornsby, Gray, Quarterman, Patterson) get going, that's when LSU becomes very difficult to beat.

They're doing just enough to keep us interested, right?

Didn't watch the game so looking forward to the topnotch BHB rundown of the win tonight. Looking at how poorly Mizzou shot the ball and some of the comments on here, the final score doesn't quite indicate how close the game was against the league doormat. With Vandy and Mi$$ $t's improvements, the only remaining sure wins may be USCe and Vandy at home.

RichTide said...

Mizzou has been outscored 70-56 in SEC play. Congrats to Coach Grant for holding them well under their average!

Evan Brock still has a career. Levi can make some coin overseas.

Much better to win than lose, but let's be honest... that was a BRUTAL game to watch. We allowed a really bad team to hang with us for 37 minutes. We also gave up 11 offensive boards. If we weren't fans of Alabama there is no way any of us would've watched this game.
Up next is LSU... a game that we have to do what we suck at to win... shoot 3s. They are big and they'll probably dominate the inside.
