Final regular season meat- @ Texas A&M 2PM EST (1PM CST)

I hope DJC and MSmilie get there early enough to receive a 12th MAN TOWEL and a chance to shoot for $5000 at halftime. While this isn't as good as Star Wars night, it's a good promotion.

Anyways... to the game at hand.

aTm write-up.
Stats

How things have changed since the 1st meeting on January 6th. The Aggies have gone 11-5 since while we have an impressive 6-10 record. A&M has lost 2 of their last 3, but are pretty much a lock for the NCAAT while we... um, are fighting for our NIT lives.

Home losses this year have been to Kentucky in OT and UGA... we got something in common with them.

Daniel House, Jalen Jones, and Alex Caruso lead the way in scoring with Kourtney Roberson and Jones being the top 2 rebounders. Caruso handles the ball well with a 2:1 Assist to turnover ratio.

Roberson shoots 63% from the field while Caruso and House shoot 39 and 40% from beyond the arc.

Numbers
- 67.7 PPG
- +4.6 rebound margin
- 65% FT

Again, this is another team that knows how to win the close games (10-6 decided by less than 10). At full strength I think we have a real shot... short-handed, I don't.

Upside is for 2 straight years Alabama basketball has set records. Last season was the worst in 40+ years and this year is the worst SEC home record in 46 years. Trend. Setting.

Game is on FSN... then off to the Wednesday SEC 1st round game vs someone similarly bad.

"Our roster has become depleted due to a spate of injuries, a reality that almost certainly was a contributing factor in those losses."

Sure, Bill. Just look at all those top 50 teams we beat when Tarrant and Hale were healthy.

You guys take the "Battle Plan" entirely too seriously. He's not going to send out a message detailing how bad the basketball program is. Have you ever read a newsletter from a business in which the weaknesses were expounded upon? No. They focus on strengths or spin things to create the illusion of strengths. It's intended to boost morale, but like most business or political documents, it's a bunch of meaningless chatter and psychobabble that should be perceived as such and ignored.

This is not to say that Battle doesn't plan to retain Grant; He very well may bring Grant back for a seventh season. Whatever he decides to do, he's not going to detail it in the Battle Plan. Nothing will be known for sure until the season is over.

"They focus on strengths or spin things to create the illusion of strengths."

exactly. like:

jeff skilling

ken lay

bernie ebbers

dennis kozlowski

richard scrushy

hank greenberg

"....... it's a bunch of meaningless chatter that should be perceived as such and ignored."

happy, i'm unsure if you intended it as such, but that's as devastating an analysis of the supposed head of Alabama's athletic dept. as i've read or heard anywhere.

take a couple of haircuts. you learn to "keep it real".

finebammer said...

fun fact: Darby Rich is A&M's strength and conditioning coach. (hat tip to CS and BP)

I'm watching the game on ESPN. It sounds like A&M has 100000 fans at their basketball game. Why can WE not be like lhat? We sound li k e we have 100. I've heard the reasons but t heyre all excuses. Going forward regardless of coach we have to FIX that.

Taylor improving but not Lessens.

in fairness, Kessens is playing hurt. i'd like a rational explanation for why Dakota hasn't seen significant playing time before these injuries. i know he's no MJ but damn, he could relieve somebody. i'm mean he is a senior.

needtoknow said...

Totally agree. He should be playing more. However that is telling when he looks a better than some o f your scholarship players.

needtoknow said...

Sorry Kessens

No towel for me, I missed my flight this morning and didn't make the game. Horrible first half, but playing great so far in the second half. Jimmie is playing great. Let's see if we can keep it up and finish.

CTider said...

This doesn't change a terrible season, but i'm happy for the players. Congrats to them on a great second half.

finebammer said...

well, they've been playing close games on the road all season. finally pulled one out. honest to god, i think this team responds to a crowd, theirs or ours. i know there's at least three home games this season that would have been won with a loud home crowd. it's just too damn bad the powers-that-be couldn't help with that.

needtoknow said...

Hell of a win. Alabama will be in the NIT and Anthony Grant will be coaching Alabama next year. Sorry CT and yes I want more than NIT. We are getting better.

CTider said...

Calm down, buddy. This team isn't going to the NIT, and when have I ever said that I believe Battle would fire Grant? Grant clearly doesn't have the what it takes to make a change, based on his many "Battle Plan" articles. You can't reasonably say after six years that we are getting better. We lose Levi, Cooper, and possibly Retin, with another transfer likely to follow. Next year's team is not an NCAAT team, but don't worry, you and the other 12 people that will be in Coleman for the games next season will get to see Mike Shu.. I mean Anthony Grant continue to set the program back 50 years.

finebammer said...

"We are getting better."

don't know about that. do know we don't have another home game. ;-)====

Chris asked Levi about the play of Slaughter. it was like you plugged him up. Randolph said HE wasn't surprised by Dakota's play. does it every practice.

hey coach, where's the SENIOR been???

needtoknow said...

I probably am delusional. I'm just stating my opinion just like you state yours. Your shit about the NIT is obviously your opinion. I have read 5-6 bracketology types that had Alabama in NIT BEFORE THIS WIN. For some reason I will go with their opinion over yours because I'm delusional.

CTider said...

Who gives a shit about the NIT? It's a garbage tournament for garbage teams. Get out of here with that.

finebammer said...

Chris said it's Vandy or UF next week. a mountain to climb.

needtoknow said...

I see individuals getting better. Taylor has really improved last 4-5 games. The only one that bothers me is Kessens but li k e you said maybe he's hurt. I would like to see him get a lot physically tougher. Yes Dakota should play.

Murray NA said...

This game shows that Bama can beat any team in SEC except Kentucky. I agree, I think Grant just got himself another year. If we could just get our post players to stop trying to dribble in traffic 1 foot away from the basket....I counted 4 turnovers from that maneuver alone. Anyway nice win.

needtoknow said...

Just reasonable observations man. I'm sorry you don't like Grant and I'm sorry you never became our athletic director so you could make all these decisions.

needtoknow said...

"This team responds to a crowd". Wouldn't you? Coleman is a morgue.

DJC said...

That drives me crazy. Kessens is the worst offender.

UT losing at home to USCe. update: UT LOST.

LSU after losing at home to UT, beats Arkansas in fayetteville.

UGA plays UK tough, struggles at home w/ Auburn.

good teams defend home court. don't buy the SEC hype.

Msmilie said...

I don't know why I'm wasting my breath, but since the NCAA began seeding this tournament a few years back it's become a much better postseason event. Now, do I want to see Alabama in the NIT? No. However, I like our players a lot. And if they are able to continue their seasons, even if only by one NIT game, then I will embrace it.

I'll write more in my recap. It was a great win. It doesn't excuse the other struggles this season, but you have to give this team a lot of credit for refusing to quit. It's not easy to keep 18-22 year old's focused through adversity (or really any age group for that matter), but these guys - last season and this season - have continued to grind despite the ups and downs. That's a credit to both the players and coaches.

CTider said...

This team always plays hard and tough. You can give the coaches credit for that if you would like, but the reality is that if the coaches were doing their jobs, they wouldn't be having seasons like the past two, especially in back to back years.

CTider said...

Going to the NIT this year is like Mike Shula going back to Shreveport if he had received a fifth year. Meaningless games.

Msmilie said...

Who the hell else would I give credit for that to? It's a reflection of the character of these players, but also the coaches for continuing to coach these guys. It may not prove to be enough based on the struggles of the last two seasons, but the coaches are still coaching, still pushing, still motivating. I respect that.

NIT games are not meaningless if you're Levi, Coop and Dakota, and you're hoping to extend your senior seasons. Try to think outside of your own narrow little sphere, CT. I don't expect you to try, but I will ask you to try.

CTider said...

I apologize for my objectivity getting in the way of your sunshine pumping. Serious question, what positive impact would a trip to the NIT have on the current state of the Alabama basketball program? Kudos to the team for the win today, but part of what made it so fun was how anomalous it was.

CTider said...

In all seriousness, if you just want to watch this team play in the NIT, because of the seniors or you just don't want the season to end, I get that, but please don't try to sell me on the NIT being a positive result for this season or having any meaning on the program's current state. Before the season, there was only one acceptable result from this season and unless we win four games in four days next week, that result ain't happening.

Msmilie said...

NO ONE IS TRYING TO SELL YOU ON THE NIT BEING A POSITIVE RESULT FOR THIS SEASON, YOU FUCKING MORON! READ! THINK! CHRIST!

All I'm saying (pay fucking attention), is that I like this group of guys and I hope they can continue their season. No, this is not the expectation that I had for this team (are you fucking paying attention?), but I will happily pull for this awesome group of guys to continue their season. Shit, man. Why do you have to be so difficult?

Msmilie said...

Look, CT. I'm sorry to curse you, man. But, goddamn, take a chill pill. You know goddamn well I wasn't sunshine pumping, but pulling for the players. Just stop trying to start shit.
