NIT round of 16- @ Miami 11am EST

Early to bed early to... play a basketball game? I guess this was done to not interfere with NCAAT action.

Since I didn't do a preview on Illinois and we won I'm going to do the same with Miami 'cause I'm a baseball fan and have superstitions.

Gonna be a tough game... Miami won at Duke, beat our favorite ex HC Gottfried, but got blown out at home by one of the worst GA Tech teams I've seen in my lifetime.

listen to the Brando and Joe Dean Jr. podcasts. we might as well go get Grant back.

archie miller currently coaching his ass off with an undermanned Dayton team v. Providence.

we could do a lot worse.

Drifter said...

What did Joe Dean Jr. say?

finebammer said...

basically that 'Bama can't hire a name coach. Brando too.

Drifter said...

Yikes. and I thought he might want to be our AD one day :(

Ok, I finally got to listen to the interview with Joe Dean Jr.
(I don't respect Brando, so I'll skip that one.)
Dean is a sharp guy, as I have always believed, and I think he's speaking from what information he has. What he doesn't understand is the our willingness now to offer what it takes to get a big name.
Now, will a big name come? I don't know. But, I think at this point, the trustees and boosters are willing to pay what it would take.
Dean does make good points about cultural differences in the south, and I agree. Not every coach would be at ease recruiting (or living) here.

Btw, I'm warming up to the Avery Johnson idea :)
(and not because of Scarbinsky)

especially w/ Pearl at Auburn, i think Avery would be an excellent fit.

and you know Brannen would love to push this team to the Big Apple and parlay that into a head coaching position somewhere.

what i see right now. Indiana parts ways w/ Crean. they hire Miller. Grant to his alma mater.

CTider said...

Marshall and Miller have to be the top two guys. Make them say no and then go down the list.

finebammer said...

well, it's over. i'll say this about it, we got beat by a better team today than alabama/b'ham's currently playing.

maybe now we can move on, fight through the crap and hire a coach.

CTider said...

$tate fired Rick Ray. Didn't see that coming.

Miami's good. I don't know how they didn't make the NCAAT. They're seems to be a lot of talent on that roster. I was rooting hard for us, but I'm kind of glad the season is over. It's time for a new era.

I hope they don't hire Haase. Don't get me wrong I would love for UAB's whinny fans to see their coach leave but he's a good coach and wouldn't take long to make MSU good again. Plus he would rob our recruits...he already did that at UAB with William Lee. Plus, MSU might go after Prohm, White or our other 3rd team coaching candidates. That won't be a problem if we can get the likes of Marshall or Crean but if we strike out with our top choices I'm afraid MSU will have already gotten those back up choices and we could be in trouble. I've always been impressed with Strickland their AD.

I would argue that UAB, assuming that their conference membership isn't affected by the football issue, is a better gig than Mississippi State. At the very least, on par. Haase can hold out another year or two and probably get a better gig if that's what he wants. It will be interesting if State makes another play for Prohm, assuming Alabama doesn't make that hire. I think Prohm to State would be a better hire than Prohm to Alabama. It's time for Alabama to aim higher.

I actually missed the game with the exception of the last five minutes. Not sure how it played out, but I read that Miami went on a 17-02 run so I assume our guys went through one of their scoring droughts. Hoping someone posts a recap.

Time to move on, hopefully make a good hire, and look forward to positive days ahead. I love college basketball overall, but it's always more enjoyable when Bama is at a higher level.

I used to really love listening to Joe Dean Jr. but I agree going off some things he's said recently I don't think he's any friend of UA. I thought his comments on a coach having to be from the south or coached in the south to recruit well is a hollow argument considering the fact that two of some the greatest basketball coaches in SEC history Donovan and Pitino were outsiders coming into their jobs at UF and UK. Plus, JDjrs buddy Pearl didn't have any experience going into the UT job he was a complete outsider to the South. Speaking of Pearl, JDjr sucks up to him like every other member of the media.

TIFWIW but Marshall isn't our top target. Not because they don't think he'll leave WSU. Because Bama is going big on this one. SERIOUS $$ on the table. May stike out and resort to Marshall or Crean or Miller or Proehm. But think Mal visiting Miami...

CTider said...

Well, Battle was in Miami today. Are you talking about Izzo?

RichTide said...

Not jinxing anything. It'll play it out how it plays out. I've already been mocked for throwing out names.

CTider said...

Understand. Keep us posted.

according to "sources close to the program": (i'm really starting to hate that phrase)

http://alabama.247sports.com/Bolt/One-name-remains-on-the-top-for-Alabama-coaching-search-36315359

now happy's got me paranoid about hiring another mid-major coach. and here's the REAL rub, if the scuttlebutt that Battle's gonna throw 3.5 to 4 mill at a new coach, who's that aimed at??? that is TOP FIVE money. is it really gonna take that kind of money to get a mid-major coach???

http://www.businessinsider.com/here-are-the-salaries-for-the-highest-paid-college-basketball-coaches-2013-12?op=1

here's an interesting experiment: coaches under 4 mill still in the tourney (it's Sunday morn)

Steve Alford - 2.6 mill

Sean Miller - 2.5

Bo Ryan - 2.4

Lon Kruger - 2.1

everybody here's favorite, Mark Gottfried - 2.0

and at #25, Dana Altman at 1.8 mill.

now mind you these numbers are two years old but.........

(and for the Izzo/roofies, Tom makes 3.7 mill a year. can we all agree that it would take significantly more than 4 mill a year to pry him away from a program he's been with for years, those around said program love him and he's given them plenty to love? Izzo is 60. He's won a natty. 6 Final Fours. 7 Big Ten titles. 4 Big Ten tourney championships. i just find it incredibly hard to believe he'd leave that situation to come and rebuild a basketball program at a football school, regardless of the intention to change the culture. similar to Saban and Alabama, it would be incredibly..........well, let's just say this would be much more believable if we were talking about Larry Brown)

Jim Boehiem makes 2.2 mill or so. Crean is gonna be lucky to hang on at Indy if you believe the chatter from up there. if Crean is unemployed, we're gonna pay him that kind of money???

in my opinion, this "source close to the program" that let the cat out of the bag on Battle's intentions (if true) has painted him in a corner that not really advantageous to him. if he doesn't hit a home run off the first pitch, his swing-for-the-fences hire ain't gonna be so much.

why does this matter? if we're serious about rebuilding this program into a next level project, perceptions are critical. critical for recruits. critical for keeping the players we have. critical for buzz around the program. you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.

and as much as i hate to say it, Gottfried coached his ass off last nite beating Villanova. (even though i thought 'Nova was over-seeded)

CTider said...

Marshall would be worth the money. Pay him whatever he wants.

Drifter said...

Give us something to raise our hopes instead of our suspicions.

CTider said...

I wasn't going to say anything, but that definitely rubbed me the wrong way. CAG couldn't do one hit for a radio show in Bham or a local TV station, but now is breaking down NCAAT games for CBS? I think CAG is a good guy, but to not do anything to promote the program for six years and then go on TV a week after being fired doesn't sit well with me. He still hasn't released a statement on his firing either, which is incredibly weird to me.

A sincere thanks. :)
