Bama/Oklahoma Tip Time Set

Alabama will tip off its 2013-14 season on November 8th at 4 PM CT against the Oklahoma Sooners. Alabama will play in the first game of a 3-game event which also includes SMU, TCU, Baylor and Colorado. Originally, the event was going to feature a fourth game between LSU and Texas, but Texas pulled out of the event. So it goes. Oklahoma has a sizable fan presence in the Dallas area so I expect them to outnumber the Tide fans in attendance, particularly with the Bama/LSU football game the following day in Tuscaloosa.

Hard to say any game that early is a must win, but the Oklahoma game is a must win.

I don't think it's a must win because Alabama has other chances for quality wins in the non-conference, but it's definitely a coin toss kind of game that would be a great way to kick off the season if our guys can do it.

It's not necesserally season ending if we lose, but considering Oklahoma is losing most of their star power from a team that barely made the tournament last year, its a game we should win, and quite frankly despite our glaring roster issues, we are probably a little more talented.

Oklahoma looks like they will be going through some transition this year, but what worries me about this game is they are going to have quite a size advantage in the backcourt, which is the strength of their team from an experience and talent perspective. They're probably going to play a 4-guard line-up and all four of those guards are big (6'4, 6'4, 6'4 and 6'7). That's going to be a tough match-up for guys like Releford and Obasohan who are just slightly above 6'0.

I think Bama may have the advantage in the post, but the match-up is probably going to force Grant to play smaller as well so that may not matter.

Also, Lon Kruger is a hell of a coach. He'll have his team ready to play. It's going to be a tough game. Probably low scoring (50s-60s) and close. Definitely a winnable game, but that guard match-up concerns me.
