Life on the road in the SEC is not easy. The Tigers jumped out to an early 10-2 lead thanks to turnovers, a technical foul, and a couple of 3s from Bowers of all people. Bama showed a lot of poise in overcoming the bad start in the hostile environment to battle back and take a 10 point lead. Unfortunately, auburn marched to the free throw line for 10 straight shots to get back into the game. Then, Canty started making shots from half-court, and auburn would regain the lead for good.
Auburn was 28 of 40 from the free throw line, while Alabama was just 19 of 28. I don't think the officiating cost us the game, but it certainly didn't help. They overturned travel call near the end of the game is one of the most ridiculous calls I've ever seen.
Mike, Jimmie, and Art all fouled out. I would have played Donta Hall more, he was decent in his five minutes and surprisingly was the one player on the floor who managed not to pick up any fouls. I also thought Brandon Austin should have played more, he was 1 for 2, making a three in limited minutes.
Retin had another great game, dropping 27 points and keeping us close for most of the second half. Shannon Hale also played well, scoring 13 points. Overall, I thought we played a decent game. After the rough start, we limited our turnovers, but we just couldn't keep Bowers off the glass or stop Canty's 40 foot shots.
Up next, the brutal January schedule continues as we return home to face LSU and arguably the best player in the country in Ben Simmons. If the Tigers bring their A-game; we will be very hard pressed to avoid a 1-5 SEC start. I'm happy to report that tickets for this game are sold out! We should have a good crowd to give our guys a boost, in what is shaping up as an early "must win." Tip off is set for 1 pm on ESPNU.
